Just found this url to SCA group tactics, thought it migth be usefull.

BTW, one thing they know about, the reason for a line, especially a line of shields. You can not only protect yourself with your shield, but the guys on either side of you as well. I have no idea how that could be done in a game. Also, in a line, its possible for two or 3 peole to all strike at one person in the apposing line at once, making it harder to defend (especially if you have guys behind you also thrusting or chopping past you with spears or polarmes). These reasons are why, if someone steps say 1/2 step froward from teh line, they may be killed rather quickly, as their sides are now exposed to multiple enemies.
I have no idea if this can be simulated here, just thought Id post it, just in case.
