How are you going to run the study of spells? Do the characters have to memorize from thier books like in D&D or does the spell stay in thier minds allowing them to cast a spell once they learned it? Can other characters teach their profession to apprentices?

According to bits and pieces dropped here and there, the limit on magic casting is going to me more of a stamina stat than anything else. The more powerful the spell, the more mana that is channeled, the more it drains the caster. Higher level casters can channel mana more efficiently, and thus cast more. Given this, I would expect the spells to pretty much stay in memory, possibly with a few exceptions to the rule to be worked out in the future, such as really powerful and complicated rituals that can't exactly be memorized

You seem to be speaking too much from a tabletop standpoint, BelDragos, where such resources as a library or a community are not easily represented fully and therefore handled best with modifiers to success rolls... In an MMORPG, it is only the work of a few dedicated people to make an entire library, and many of the "community of mages" will be supplied by the PC mages playing the game... Therefore, having those resources available would modify success intrinsically and therefore would not need to provide any outside modifier.
just remeber, when Armageddon happens, it would probably be my fault......:)

Ya, Mental Stamina is drained when you cast a spell because you're concentrating hard to channel energy and use it effectively. Mental Stamina will be linked with Physical Stamina so that if you cast a powerful spell and use all your mental stamina, you'll be in no mood to do jumping jacks.
Memory is one of the mental stats also and the greater your memory, the more spells you can have hotkeyed. You can read spells straight from your spell book, but at a very increased casting time, probably double or triple.
Research hasn't been discussed yet and we're still working it out over here. Feel free to post suggestions that you think would be helpful.

How about spell research? What kind of modifiers will apply to the study and creation of new magics? How will acess to a large library or community of mages influence?

The order of this thread seems to be jumbled too.

I like Rolfe's system. Good and solid: More great, pragmatic decisions coming out of BrickHouse.
Any word yet on the definate schools of magic available?
