I think this game looks great. Its about time that a MMRPG was built by people who have experiance with previous MMRPGs. As an avid D&D fan, I'm also glad that a new internet game is being based on the tried-and-true philosophies of "what makes a good game" as well as innovating. I can't wait to see how this production turns out.

Personally, I like the Undead Lords. Bring some of that good, old fashioned Necromantic Niftyness back into RPGs. Who doesn't like a flesh-rending Gnome Ghoul Thief, or the fun of a vampiric Ogre shaman? Not to leave out the Liches- what interesting and diabolical plots they weave! (though I do hope that the Undead Lords won't be composed solely of Liches or Lich wannabes...that gets old really fast. I'd like to see dedicated factions of zombies, skeletons, vampires and ghasts. Don't they deserve a shot and conquering the forces of light as well?)
Personally, I'll be trying to start a wizardly guild when the game comes out... I don't see the sense in making a web page quite yet, as we don't know how Magic skills will be arranged or even what they all would be.
Hm, anyone else on this board interested in playing Pure Magician-sort characters? (none of that "cast fireball-hide in shadows-throw a handaxe" stuff for me...)
Slitherrr
09-23-2000, 09:01 PM
The fact that a group as huge as the Undead Lords is looking at Arcanity automatically is cool. If only they'd stop looking at me, ugh, sunken fleshy eye sockets, disgusting. As for the pure caster business, I say monk all the way, take em down with your bare self or don't take em down at all. Who's with me?
Dyson
09-23-2000, 10:27 PM
Huge is good..though I still like the coziness of smaller guilds. I think seeing how the first few wizardly guilds pan out will be fun...I'll be trying to form one of a "magic for magic's sake" standpoint, I think. Something nice and neutral.

I am very interested in setting up a mage guild. The guild will be devided into the various specialties ( clerical, druidical, wizardly, psionics) and be governed under a chancler. The inital members could be instructers at game start. We could charge an entrance fee for anybody wishing to enter such as aprenticement, magic in the form of spells or items, or good old money to fund the school. We could pool all of our spells to create the greatest library in the game. With all the mages working together nobody would try to destroy our school. Even the Necromancers will have to come to us for their spell research. All of the pure for the sake of magic characters should contact me if you are interested in forging what could be the most powerful guild in the game. We could even enploy what has been so lovingly called "meat shields" which I concider non-magic grunts for defence if needed.

Slides in beside the other Females who are ladies in waiting to enter the new world. I have played Meridian 59 - ah sadly I reopenned my account and was there for the final days. I still have accounts on EQ and AC but frankly I am bored. I am waiting patiently by my mailbox for notice from Dark Ages of Camelot - sounds like not a big chance though with the referal process. He all... I am waiting intently for this game.. I am really curious as to how it will turn out...
BTW...I have heard rumors of the games having the ability to have new spells created as the games goes along. I was wondering, being a curious and insistant magic user, as well as a guy who like to physically beat the living crap out of the enemy with a little help from magic and my trusty "dragon's blade of biting", how this was going to happen. I think that the game should be built with an open end and allow new spells to be petitioned for by upper level characters who have earned the skill to do such things.
I know this isn't exactly the appropriet topic to reply to for this, but hey...I'm enthused and currious about the game. I've been playing RPG's since I was 5 and have played many of them from nintendo based to old style computer D&D for the commodore64...yet I haven't heard of anything this cool.
Also, about that there magic guild of yures, would there be any room in there for a man who loves magic, but not only magic?
well, I'll be back again... Gimme a ring anyone, but please be nice.

From what I understand the entire system is based on the skills you take. If you want you can take the skills for use of magic. skills for "fighters", Skills for "thievery". ECT...
If you chose primarily from one "type" of skills you would be weaker in the others. The example was a fighter type character taking a magic skill for healing at the sacrifice of skill mastery in some of his fighter type skills.
I believe you will find out some of your answers under the GAME option to the left.
Since you asked, The guild that I want to set up will be open to anybody who practices the magics. I haven't learned enough on how the skill systems are going to be set up in order to construct the Mage Guild guidelines.
Awaiting info.
I hope you have fun.
Dyson
11-28-2000, 07:46 PM
Bel, even though you don't have specifics, we know there are going to be at least a few different schools of magic. You could start with a rudimentary heirarchy based off that principle (ie, those with experiance make decisions for that particular "school," different school leaders debate on the guild high council for funding, policy, etc). Then when we find out later what the specifics are (say, there will definately Necromancy and Aeromancy, etc), you can start constructing the school setup themselves, and possible start recruiting for them (so if you know someone big on playing a Fire Mage, and the developers say there will definately be a Pyromancy school, you assign her/him to that guild sub-set).
That way, when the game comes out, you'll have a small core group of people who can immediately start learning their perspective fields, and be experianced enough to help teach the later wave of newbies who find out about the game through word-of-mouth.

Hail everyone.
Almost let this game slip by. After reading many many of the posts on both boards, there is one thing that stands out! There are a LOT of table top players here. Some very long and detailed posts. I like all the posts made by the staff. I have read more posts by this staff, in one night, then I have seen from UO in almost 4 years. It's great to have to have such a rare thing.

Hmm, yer right, lots of tabletop players. I havent done tabletop since 3 booklets boxed more than 20 years ago. I was lucky to have hooked up with the start of probably the best tabletop group around, in Pensaclola Florida, so good I even heard of them later, they were sorta legendary.
I still remeber the time the massivly strong, massivly clumsy, and massively lucky dwarf threw the demon back through the blade barrier. We later made a "Blade Barrier Inn" with a big painting on the wall about it.
We had another guy who, despit not being the strongest, smartest, or outstanding in any way party member, seemed to be always saving our butts. We later made a new caracter class, the "Joe Normal", got special saving rolls and such if he stayed unremarkable, didnt get too good or strong, didnt use super weapons, etc.
Sadly, after that I never found any D&D group that even came close, so I sorta gave it up. Its the people, get the right people and it works, otherwise it dont.
Who knows though, maybe Ill be able to build the sort of giant flying ship/fish thing I designed waaaaay back then and never got to build. This is probably the only game that could handle it, the other games wouldnt be flexible enough. It would look neat, kinda expensive to make Im sure, but neat :) I designed all kinda things for it to, guided "missiles", automated controls, all using simple magic and putting it together in clever ways. I had it drawn up long ago, now even years later its all in my head. It would certainly be colorfull, anyway.
Its only problem is you have to make it strong enough to not get et by the first dragon that sees it flying by. "Et", thats what Wrentia plans to do to me, BTW. Hmm, come to think of it, she wants to be a dragon to...
Oh well, it was a nice dream while it lasted.

This game looks great. From what I read It looks like it will break the norm. I had almost given up on the MMORPG. Thankfully I stumbled upon the Arcanity. Hello everyone i'm new to the board but really excited about this MMORPG already. For this to become the UO, Everquest killer i think it can become is to make it intersting. Not by making millions of items or monsters, ( just a little above, hehe), but by making a great story that the characters can influence, and monsters that wander not "pop" or "spawn" in one location, which leads to camping. What the mmorpgs already running are missing is the adventure that it should inspire, it shouldn't be about racing to the highest lvl possible, but the journey there. Ok i'm done rambling just had to get that off my chest, hehe.

Thank the Gods that I have browsed onto this site looking for a new MMORGP to replace all the dying olds ones that I play (EQ, AC, Lineage, Cosrin, Terris, etc, etc). If there is one game to sweep the market this year, I'd have to say it's Arcanity.

I am extremely excited about the upcoming release of Arcanity. I was looking for a good MMORPG to join. But was intimidated by games like EQ, AC, and the like that have characters with hundreds of hours of game time logged, that I could never hope to catch-up too (being a newbie). I was looking for an environment where I could have an opportunity to learn, explore, and discover things that have not previously been discovered by hundreds of other players.
Thankfully I found Arcanity. It seems like it should be even more engaging than the other games that I mentioned, and also give me an opportunity to explore a world that is new to myself as well as all of the other players.
Can't wait to meet you all inside

01-09-2001, 06:07 PM
Oh, it's possible to catch up, in AC at least, with a power-leveler mentor you'll climb quite fast, level after level... if that's what you really want.
It seems to me sometimes that gaining levels is just about all you can do in that game, though I haven't quite given up on it, too stubborn I guess...
z_man93
01-09-2001, 07:09 PM
Exactly, that's the problem, being too focused on "level". I would be very happy if that word would never appear in Arcanity. That is exactly what I was trying to say. It is no fun starting a game where a major factor is level and you are starting at 1 trying to interact with people near 100.
I am basically saying that a person's worth should not be judged by their level, which is what tends to happen.
It would be nice if level was not such a driving factor in Arcanity.
Su'ulMorda
01-09-2001, 11:11 PM
There are no levels in Arcanity, only skill "level". And likely you'll still find an old guard player two years down the road to be well ahead of you.
My beef with AC was that the cycle of hunt-kill-sell was the main basis of the game, me, I'm looking for something more...
Kintoun
01-10-2001, 02:47 AM
Ya, I'm looking for more emphasis on Quests ( EQ quests were profitable, fun, and made you group... but were always broken ) as well as other ways to earn exp BESIDES having to go out and kill monsters... Ultima Online was good at giving you many different ways to live your life while becoming more and more powerful. I'd love to see ways like buffing, and healing people gains you exp, trade-skills that gain you exp, quests, or even the vassle idea from Asherons Call.
z_man93
01-10-2001, 01:44 PM
True, hunt-kill-sell gets real old, real quick. I like Kintoun's views, a diversification of quests and other ways of gaining experience would help keep things fresh.

Hail and Welcome to Morte and Z-Man. Have fun on the boards with us until the game is ready to go.
Sul', I agree, I want to see a more dynamic questing system here. NO Fed-Ex quests. I would also like to see a wide varity of rewards, not just items. Besides getting a unique item, there could be quests purily to gain your gods favor and exp., to gain a new skill tree for unique moves for warriors, gain a unique spell for casters.
Su'ulMorda
01-12-2001, 04:13 PM
Personnaly, I think it would be fun to have a reputation in a particular area grow, the local authorities and people come to revere a particular hero of their area. This could be tied into the karma system perhaps...
z_man93
01-12-2001, 06:41 PM
My question is will negative karma be beneficial to players that choose to align with the dark side. Is there a possibility of Dark Knight's that gain power from the slaughter of good individuals, or cities for outlaws where people with good karma may fear to go. Is bad karma something that everyone will want to avoid?
Kymeri mac An Iolar
01-13-2001, 07:01 AM
I haven't heard of any benefits to bad karma for players. So far whats been discussed is that if a PC kills another PC, that person can put a bounty on them and they can be killed for a reward. If a PC gets a bad enough reputation for killing that he comes to the attention of a Monarch, that monarch could sic a NPC bounty hunting team on him, that never quits until the job is done. Also, that if enough negitive karma reports are turned in against someone, then the world thinks of him as evil and he will have a harder time in town. There are no towns where players will be KOS (Kill On Site), but it towns with good alignment he would get charged higher prices or the merchant may not deal with him and all. NPC's for quests might not speak to him if his karma is bad enough, limiting the players gains, but he might be favorablily received in a goblin town, since they are evil.
BelDragos
01-13-2001, 12:19 PM
Since goblins are evil, they might kill him to collect the reward.
Morte
01-13-2001, 06:06 PM
Or they might be convinced to fight for you, in exchange for a large pile of gold, or under the threat of utter annihilation if you are really powerful. If you can meddle in the politics of a human city, you should be able to bully, bribe or otherwise convince the goblins to sack a nearby settlement. They probably wouldn't need all that much encouragement, being evil and all.
Kintoun
01-13-2001, 10:42 PM
I like the idea of being able to interact with NPC's in other ways besides just quests, and attacking. It would actually be nice to hire them to do deeds. An example would be if your high lev enough you could walk into a low lev Goblin camp and demand anything (within reason) you want. Even be able to talk to their leader or king in the city and be able to control them. Of course I am speaking of extremely high ranking player going into a extremely low lev Gob city. This would be hard to implement and control, but would really add to the fun of the game. And a good way to get revenge on the Gobs that sent you to morturary so many times :D
In a lot of posts I like stressing the idea of being able to do stuff besides kill/loot/sell or regular quests.
Su'ulMorda
01-14-2001, 12:27 AM
Seems to me it would not be out of line for the negative karma types to hang with their own, undead, orcs and the like. Such an "evil" character might find that his reputation for "non-weak" ways might appeal to such beings, who might align with him.
BelDragos
01-14-2001, 03:03 AM
Or see him as a threat and eliminate him before he becomes one....
Morte
01-14-2001, 04:02 AM
Then you kill a few to set an example, to make them cooperate. Of course they might kill you the moment you turn your back to them, but that's only natural for evil creatures.
BelDragos
01-14-2001, 05:37 AM
And evil creatures usually have bigger Bosses that their king answers to that will see your attempt as muscling in on his territory.
If you want to go right ahead.....
One less evil player to worry about.
Morte
01-14-2001, 05:57 AM
So you would just have to eliminate the king or other authority figure, or better still, manipulate him to let him do as you wish, so the blame would fall on him when things go awry.
And who says I'm evil. I'm not.
BelDragos
01-14-2001, 06:06 AM
Controling a goblin tribe to sack a settlement usually would be considered evil. Then there's the task of finding their Boss and dealing with him.
If you were just trying to trick them into attacking their allies it would fall under Politics.
Morte
01-14-2001, 06:15 AM
Point is, there will (hopefully) be lots of possibilities. I would love to see a game where I can actually put my usually overcomplicated plans into action. In a real life virtual world you should be able to trigger a full scale war between an orc and a goblin clan, or bring peace between a goblin and orc clan, although I imagine that would be a bit harder to accomplish.
BelDragos
01-14-2001, 06:18 AM
Something like that would be a noble cause to control the goblins. I thought that you ment to use them as troops against other players, an evil act?
Morte
01-14-2001, 06:34 AM
What I want to be able to do is anything I am able to think of (within reason of course), and continuing with the goblin example, I want to be able to start a war, end a war, sack a settlement, attack a group of noble adventures, attack a group of PKers that need killing, in short anything I can think of that is in spirit with the character I am playing at. It doesn't mean I intend to sack some idyllic village. I just used that example as it is probably not that hard to convince a clan of goblins to kill innocent and defenceless people. So far I have not really decided what kind of character I want to play, since I like to make an informed decision and presently have not enough info to do that. And anyway, it will be a while before it comes out so I can play it. Unless I manage to get into the Beta, that is.
BelDragos

Just be careful. Goblin captives will threaten their prison guards with retribution from their new leader. That will warrent investigation and you rack up a Karma change, positive or negitive.

Evil is, entirely, by point of view. The "evil" fellow may the goblin version of a saint...
Debating evil is amusing, but, the final decision is never unanimous in the end.

The situation still warrants caution.

If it didn't, it would be boring.

But it would make it frustrating if you kept getting killed by them.

If you keep getting killed by them , your obviously doing something wrong.

Like going back trying to control them after they are alerted to your actions. Their boss has to be smarter than them of at the very least more powerful with someone who is smarter.

Instead, you must make them fight each other, Cause strife and infighting, sow the seeds of entropy. In the midst of the chaos, kill their leader, stop the fighting and start wreaking havoc. Quite simple, really.

Except for their leaders boss and his boss and his boss...

Then you just go on a mindless killing spree, killing every thing in sight until they turn you into a man-sized pincushion.

Ugh, horrid thought, the old computer games where you just hack through minions, beat a boss every level the kill the uber-boss at the end... the stomach churns.

No prizes for guessing my name is Neville.
I'm a long-time RPG-player, loads of tabletop experience.
I live in Cape Town, South Africa, and am looking forwards
to seeing how this game shapes up in play.
As a vote of confidence for the game design staff, I have
never been tempted to play a MMORPG before, but the blurb
and concept of this one has me interested already.
I like to examine all my options before I create a character
so unlike some others I'm not going to commit to playing a
monk-sort or anything else before I even see the final mix
of skills and options... :)
Starting to really look forwards to this one...
Anyone wants to reach me, you can find me as
neville@global.co.za
and if you'd like to chat about something, email that address and I can probably give you an MSN Messenger
handle and an ICQ number at least :)

Hello and Greetings
This is my first post on this board and I would like to say what original and promising ideas this game is set to achieve.
I Cant wait to see how this game will develop especially with all the input gathered from the gaming public.
Personally I like idea of double-handed and 2 single-handed weapons that can greatly add to the character of a player as well as add an interesting variable in combat.
Hope all goes well...
welcome, im glad to be the first "welcomer" for you :)
