View Full Version : Fresh Idea

So fresh, I', gonna type it before I think about it. :)

OK, in DAoC beta, they have a thing called Realm Points that is kinda like a fame rating. Since that can be a part of the karma system, I was thinking of ways OUTSIDE of normal play that could possibly increase your karma in some way. So How about this....

When a character reaches a certain level in a skill, he would be able to teach that skill to someone else. So Lets say Dyson has become a Master at reading/writing. He would then be able to teach young Rutherford the Brave how to read and write. But only up to say two/thirds of his own skill level. (there could even be a teaching skill so you can improve the ratio to 100%). Dyson could charge for his instructions to make a little pocket change. And like always, when you are taught a skill, only your potential for that skill has improved. You still have to use it to get better.

Anyway, another idea off the top of my head...

I really like this. Like you mentioned the teaching skill would improve and with it the amount retained by the student. This would make students seek-out more experienced teachers that would be able to offer more to them. And not only would a teacher need to develop the skill being taught but their teaching ability as well. And of course, the best way to learn a subject is to teach it, so when you teach something that base skill as well as your teaching skill might improve.

Hmm this idea sure sounds similar to an idea I posted awhile ago... heh heh. I believe strongly in allowing other PC's to teach other PC's spells/skills. This not only aloows for better social interactions but also a way for people to start a business.

It also allows newbies a chance to advance in (skill) levels more quickly than they would otherwise.

Balance-wise, the only complication I see is the fact that there would have to a rather significant investment of time to prevent more experienced characters from becoming ridiculously wealthy. For instance, take Sir Brightblade, a L45 knight who decides to become an educator.

Eager to learn from such a noble and experienced knight, prospective students line up around the block, some even falling into the moat in their haste. Brightblade charges 500 gold for a lesson that lasts, say, a minute. An hour later he has 30K gold pieces.

OTOH, having lessons last even nearly as long as they would IRL would make learning skills just as much anti-fun as real school. So some kind of balance must be struck....

Of course there needs to be some type of time investment in order for a PC to teach a PC. But not everyone will be lining up to just ONE person for training... And as in every economy the price will depend on supply and demand.

Prices would depend on suply, demand, and quality. I asked this question a few months ago but it got buried in the thread without getting answered.

Nice idea Wrentia, I like the idea of being able to teach people.

Yes keeping the teaching a bit tedious will detract people from constantly doing it for money. Making it more of a master and disiple type idea. That will add a whole new aspect to learning arts. Such as the monk grand master taking on a worthy student to teach the advanced warrior arts. Sounds real fun to roleplay.

Sis, you are going to have a long list of people to put on sticks by the time we start this game.

There , there. Don't feel so bad. Not all the post we make get read or answered. Such is the way of the Message Board (tm). Besides, shouldn't an Elder God of Magic be a bit more patient?
