Have you guys thought of implementing some sort of card game as an in-game activity. Like... Final Fantasy VIII, they had a great card game, then, there would be Rare cards to find throughout the world.. heh just a thought.

I think this would be a great idea. Some bosses would drop them, very very very infrequently. Many lower level bosses would have good cards, maybe, so that all players have a good chance, eh? Perhaps you start off with 5 random cards of 50, mediocore cards?
I dunno, maybe have some mini-game it set this game apart. At all the towns there are tables you can play on, and maybe have minature boards you can bring along...
But anyway... umm... yay, I like it... (I've bene having a weird day, so excuse if I don't make sense...)

[EDIT: Maybe have some character cards.. like Morte, or UBIK, or BelDragos, I dunno... my head hurts..]

I like this idea. In most cases I really think that reality is what all aspects of the game should be based upon, but I think there should be some exceptions. This could be one of the exceptions. Actually anything that adds interest or promotes roleplaying should have priority over realism.

Just be sure to use my good side for the picture.
But seriously, if we use a set of cards based on the players we would all have to submit an origional to avoid copyrite laws.

I didnt like the card game in FF8, never got to play the FF9 one becuz i didnt get enough time to play the game itself... I wouldnt mind it where like u can buy differnt games (like chess and checkers in UO) but I dont think there should be one that si so gerneral and all... but Im just 1 person
we could have special Ubik the god of darkness trading cards!
(Kintoun dont you dare bring up saber marionette J :) )

Hmm I don't get the SMJ reference there Ubik. Wanna explain it to me? I have so much damn anime flying thru my eyes that it's hard for me to remember all the specifics. Heh funny thing tho is that right when I read your post winamp randomized to the SMJ OP, heh.
Some kind of game would be awesome. I think this is on another recent thread. Don't want no stupid EQ type game which had 0 relevance to EQ or being IC. But in-game support would be awesome for some sort of card game, or some side game of some kind.
Howabout raising animals ala FF chocobos? You can raise an animal which can have many differnet uses. Could raise a utility animal, helps you travel faster, and carry more. Or a fighting animal, one which helps you during battle. Who knows, there are tons of ideas.
EDIT: heh or what about in-game TV's from which we can watch 24/7 fansubbed anime?

On raising animals. This could be part of a huge money sink....Raising animals for races that are bet on by other players.
The owner of the animal would have a bunch of expenses until the animal is ready to race, then depending on how successful the animal is, could make the money back plus alot more. Then there is the general money sink of people betting on the outcome.
The race animals could gain "experience" and become better at racing, thus getting better odds. There also needs to be a way for that 30:1 animal to win once in a blue moon as well.
Just some thoughts

Aye, raising, training, racing, exploiting creatures sounds great. As far as having a couple different games - the games could be regional. There can be a traditionally Ack game that uses creatures from around the Ack villages. And then there can be another based on creatures from around human villages and so on...

It would give something to do between arena fights.

Card games are like candy, they look good, but when you actually get it you get sick of it all too quickly. Common remember that this is an rpg, trying to make it more than hack and slash then do it, but addiing cards would be an unnecessary diversion.

Card Games was only a suggestion. If playing cards was "boring" to everyone then cards as we know it would be extinct. As said we can use pretty much nething to make a game out of. As an example, tetris is HARD to get bored of. Of course I'd shoot myself if I saw tetris in a MMORPG, but it is an example of a simple game that does not require jack from developer or sys reqs, yet is extremely addicting.

Having some games would be fun. We talked before about having casinos or tavern games. It would jut add a social context to the game. You gather with your friends at a tavern or guild hall and play some poker to win some in game cash. Dicing was a common medieval pastime in tavern that on more than one occassion lead to some good tavern brawls. Skill ability Cheating, the chance of getting caught at it and having to fight?

Then we definately need a cheating skill somewhere on the gambling skill tree. You have to know about the game to cheat in it.

Forgive me for interrupting; I was wondering if any of the posters on this thread read any magazines concerning role-playing card games. If so could you tell me which ones you read and which you recommend? If not, kindly disregard this post. Thankyou.
Oh! Kintoun: I agree with your view of Tetris.

Too bad we couldn't get the permission to have Magic, the Gathering as a card game. That would take way too much money and time.

I think the idea is to have In Character card games. I would imagine people in a fantasy setting would ignore a game like Magic: The Gathering.....much like I do! hehe

Maybe the "better" charas (those who almost never get beaten) could have their own cards (a card of themselves) that they would give to anyone who beat them in arena battle.. Just an Idea~

I remember in Diablo if you killed a player you could take his ear and it would say Sympathy's Ear. Some player had quite extensive collections. In UO if you were hunting people for bounties you could take their head :)

that would be cool, you could set up cards to kind of be like actual characts or monsters or whatever and have thier stats, and there could be a spell that turned a corpse into a card, so you kill some one you can turn thier body into a card... sept becuz of things like looting maybe you cast it on thier body, and the body can only be so old.. like 2 minutes or less, and a card pops up next to it... and it would have thier stats...

That would be great as a way of income! There could be NPCs that run card shops at which you could sell your cards. Then common cards like low stat greeblies and such could be cheep, and higher stats cards could be expensive!

The problem is when those nasty PKers come along and try taking us as cards for their trophys.
