I was just wondering about the combat system. Will it have Locational damage. Personnaly, I think locational damage takes away from a lot of the repetativeness of fighting(But of course there won't be any in this game anyway). You would have to have locational health. This would add the possibily of losing limbs, and being able to get them restored by priests or possibly sewn back on by a very skilled medic.

This would add a lot more purpose to different armor locations , buying a really awesome brestplate shouldn't help you against a rat gnawing at your legs.

I would also like to see realistic damage. If an attack successfully goes through armor, then the person takes a lot of damage, but if not, the person shouldn't be hurt much at all, just possibly stunned. A lot of games use armor to sort of absorb some of the impact, but that really isn't how better armors like plate work.

Armor should also be more or less venerable to varied types of attack. Leather has a decent chance of stopping a slash attack, but if your take a thrust, it wouldn't really help much at all.

This locational damage should be used for missile weapons too. You could aim for parts that are more lightly armored on enemies, or shoot someone in the legs if you want to only bring them down.

I don't remember localized damage ever being discussed. I do remember some things about armor (and other items) though.

Rich stated in Ruadin's "Equipment/Items vs. Skill" thread:
...armor provides protection against damage, it doesn't raise your "armor class". So if you are a naked warrior, your lack of armor won't affect your ability to avoid getting hit (in fact, it might even help since you won't be weighed down).

Rolfe also stated in toray's "Treatment of health(hit points) thread:
One thing that seems like it could really add to the system is a way for the person who prefers the fast and light combo to have an advantage over a goth plate muscle head when fighting a magic user. Here's the one way I've thought of for that to be possible so far. It seems to me that a magic user could run much faster than the guy in full plate. So he'd just run a little and blast and run and blast. He'd fly the guy in plate like a kite. So what we're planning on is different running speeds. The dynamics of the different running speeds isn't too important here and it's pretty self explanitory how they'd be figured. Basically, heavier armor = slower running speed. Your strength and the encumberance of the armor would have to come into play somehow too. It would be realistic for the guy with the rapier to catch up with the wizard since wizards aren't likely going to be all that athletic. So that gives the rapier gentleman an edge on the wizard that the plate goon doesn't have.

I swear there was another quote on the use of armor, but I can't seem to find it. Ah well... I hope that answers at least part of your concerns.

There was a time waaaay back, when one people could beat any other because they had good bows but no armor. They shot, ran away for a bit, then shot again. Worked great till someone invented chariots, after that the foot archers had a rougher time of it.
Later on, horse archers came out. Took a lifetime of practice to do it, but the archers could once again shoot and run (in fact, unlike foot archers they could do both at the same time). Works on horseback just like the mage versus plate good here, except its the horses speed and not yours that matters. Works great as long as you have the training, proper bow, and of course the right ground for this sort of thing.
I think thats pretty much the sort of thing your talking about.

Spell combat could also target specific areas of the body. A stunned swordarm could be a pain in battle. How about a paralyized leg (damn leg fell asleep again!!) during a footchase. Glue or grease conjured on the arms and hands of an opponant could be quite comical. Thats not taking into account the many dammaging spells like fireball, lightning bolt, withering, ect... Rotting Touch is begging to be local specific especially if they fumble and touch the wrong friend. Hit locations should be included.
