If i go to a blacksmith or get a bsmithing skill, could i design my own weapons from scratch and break the mold of the sword/axe/polearm/{insert random weapon} seen in all other medieval rpgs?

Seems unlikely.
For one, how would you create the 3D model for your weapon? How would you create the animation of a character wielding your weapon?
Don't forget that this is a computer game, and there are some serious tech limitations on content.
1) You will not be able to create new items
2) You will not be able to modify the terrain.
3) Too much realism is just as much of a detriment as not enough realism
Cheers
actually, being a 3d modeler myself, its not hard to make weapons, its just hard to keep 'em low poly count, it shouldnt be to hard for rich or rolfe to make a smithy screen where you could choose how the weapon looks (from pre-set models) and as with animation, you dont animate weapons, the only animations would be the way the arm swings, the weapon just "sits" there in the hand, why the arm moves it around, so rich or rolfe could also have pre-set animations for it too, that way you could make weapons... a while ago i was reading on an upcomming game where you could morph the terrain (very slowley) so it shouldnt be to hard for brickhouse to implament that, since the other game was being made by like 10 people.
hope that helps a little

As of now, the trade skills are set on "secondary" status. The basic system is the main concern at the moment, so a system such as the one Kiros suggested would be implemented loong after release, if it is implemented at all. I do think that the creation of new weapons would be an interesting idea, but a much easier (both to implement and to deal with) system would be merely having an extremely large variety of weapons available.
